The Size of it: Scant Evidence That Flower Size Variation Affects Deception in Intersexual Floral Mimicry

چکیده
Mutualisms involve cooperation, but also frequently conflict. Plant-pollinator mutualisms are no exception. To facilitate animal pollination, flowering plants often offer pollen (their male gametes) as a food reward. Since benefit by maximizing export to conspecific flowers, we might expect cheat on rewards. In intersexual floral mimicry, rewarding pollen-bearing flowers (models) mimicked rewardless female (mimics) the same plant. Pollinators should therefore learn avoid unrewarding mimics. Plants impede such learning producing phenotypically variable that cause bees generalize among models and mimics during learning. this laboratory study, used partially artificial (artificial petals, live reproductive parts) modeled after Begonia odorata test whether variation in size of affected how quickly learned both recognize reject Live have 33% longer petals 31% greater surface area than which easily discriminate. Yet while rapidly reduce foraging effort mimics, was not significantly degree flower varied. Additionally, found scant evidence result altering response speed maintain decision accuracy. Our study failed provide mimicry systems exploits pollinator cognition, though cannot rule out other traits may be important. Furthermore, propose contrary expectation, phenotypic variability Batesian system necessarily significant effects receivers effectively discriminate

Pollinator responses to variation in floral display and flower size in dioecious Sagittaria latifolia (Alismataceae).
In animal-pollinated plants with unisexual flowers, sexual dimorphism in floral traits may be the consequence of pollinator-mediated selection. Experimental investigations of the effects of variation in flower size and floral display on pollinator visitation can provide insights into the evolution of floral dimorphism in dioecious plants. Here, we investigated pollinator responses to experiment...

Flowers, as repeated modules on a plant, may show population dynamics that correspond to ecological models for population growth. We hypothesized that rate of flower production (birth rate), number of open flowers per day (population size) and flower duration (longevity) should be related to plant resource status. With dioecious species, resource demands of male or female function would contrib...
متن کاملALLOMETRIC SCALING AND FLORAL SIZE VARIATION IN COLLINSIA by
Allometric scaling theory has previously been used to estimate the functional relationship between two biological variables. In addition to parameter estimation, deviations from the general scaling relationship can be used to create hypotheses. Here, I explore deviations from the allometric scaling pattern for plant and floral size within the genus Collinsia on three levels: among species, with...
متن کاملFlower size variation in Rosmarinus officinalis: individuals, populations and habitats.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Flowers are relatively invariant organs within species, but quantitative variation often exists among conspecifics. These variations represent the raw material that natural selection can magnify, eventually resulting in morphological divergence and diversification. This paper investigates floral variability in Rosmarinus officinalis, a Mediterranean shrub. METHODS Nine pop...
متن کاملControl of flower size.
Flowers exhibit amazing morphological diversity in many traits, including their size. In addition to interspecific flower size differences, many species maintain significant variation in flower size within and among populations. Flower size variation can contribute to reproductive isolation of species and thus has clear evolutionary consequences. In this review we integrate information on flowe...
